Overlying the South Pole and scarcely touched by humans, the frozen Antarctic boasts breathtaking scenery, broken only by a handful of scientific bases housing a few thousand scientists. Antarctica is the coldest and driest continent on earth and has no significant land plant life and no native land mammals, reptiles or amphibians. During the winter the sea is impassable and there are 24 hours of darkness each day.
