Bahrain is an Arab kingdom occupying an archipelago of 33 islands in the Persian Gulf, flanked by Saudi Arabia and Qatar. It is the smallest of the independent Persian Gulf states and, unlike its neighbors, has few oil reserves – although it is a hub for refining. Although mostly arid desert, Bahrain has many freshwater wells and there are places in the sea north of Bahrain where fresh water bubbles up in the middle of the salt water.
