Barbados is an island in the Caribbean. Its name comes from a Portuguese explorer named Pedro Campos who, in 1536, called the island Los Barbados (“The Bearded Ones”), after the appearance of the island’s fig trees. Barbados is renowned as being a very healthy place to live – people used to travel from all over the world to be buried (for reasons of health!) up to their necks in the sands of the many beaches.
