Liberia is in West Africa and is bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Côte d’Ivoire. Facing the Atlantic Ocean, the coastline is characterized by lagoons, mangrove swamps and river-deposited sandbars. The country has historical ties to the United States, having been founded by freed slaves during the nineteenth century.  Liberia has had more female leaders, presidents or prime ministers than Norway, Sweden and South Korea combined.
