Libya is on the Mediterranean coast of North Africa and is bordered by Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Chad, Niger and Sudan. Around 8,000 BC, the coastal plain of ancient Libya was inhabited by a Neolithic people who kept cattle and grew crops. Later the area was occupied by a series of other peoples, including Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Persian Empire, Romans, Vandals, Arabs, Turks and Byzantines. The Libyan desert covers most of the country and sometimes receives no rainfall for decades. libya
