|Geographically part of the Maghreb, Mauritania borders Algeria, Senegal, Mali and the disputed territory of Western Sahara. It is a country of desert and ocean. The main tourist attractions are the desert in Adrar and the Tagant areas and the ocean in Banc d’Arguin, a UNESCO reserve with dunes ending in the sea and full of millions of birds. The country’s most striking feature is the Richat Structure, or ‘Eye of the Sahara’. This is a 40 km wide geological feature that, from a distance, looks like an enormous bulls eye.
