|The Federated States of Micronesia in the northwestern Pacific Ocean lie just north of the equator and about three-quarters of the way from Hawaii to Indonesia. They comprise 607 tropical islands consolidated into four major groups or states. The islands range from mountainous to low, coral atolls and volcanic outcroppings. The population of something over 100,000 depends mainly on tourism, fishing and fish processing and subsistence farming. Every Christmas the United States Air Force mounts ‘Operation Christmas Drop’, which airdrops gifts donated by the people of Guam to the people of the remote Kapingamarangi Atoll.
