Palau comprises a group of tropical islands in the Micronesia area of Oceania, to the southeast of the Philippines. Early Palauans may have come from Polynesia and Asia. Present day Palauans may represent many parts of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia and are not traditionally considered to be Micronesian. Palau offers scuba diving of a quality second to none and this and the more somber activity of visiting World War II battlefields, are major tourist attractions. Palau is home to the rightly feared saltwater crocodile but there has been only one fatal attack by these animals within recorded history and that was in 1965.
