Saudi Arabia, officially called “The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia” is the largest country in the Arab states by land area and is bordered by Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Oman and Yemen. It has both Red Sea and Persian Gulf coasts and the world’s largest continuous sandy desert – called the Rub’ al Khali, meaning the “Empty Quarter”. It has no permanent rivers or lakes, very little rainfall but masses of oil. A litre of drinking water in Saudi Arabia costs more than a litre of petrol.
