Senegal is located in West Africa and borders the Senegal River and the Atlantic Ocean. It is also bordered by the following countries: Mauritania, Mali, Guinea and Gambia. The topography includes grassy plains and gentle foothills. The majority of the country has a temperate tropical climate though in the south, near the border of Mali, the temperature can climb to 129 degrees Fahrenheit! Goree Island, next to the capital of Dakar, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is famous as one of the central ports of slave trading.
