Yemen is on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula and borders Saudi Arabia and Oman. It consists of a narrow coastal plain backed by flat-topped hills and rugged mountains, with upland desert plains which slope into the desert interior of the Arabian Peninsula. The sights are amazing, the people are friendly and their culture is unique. Yemen has long been at the crossroads of cultures and it linked some of the oldest centres of civilization in the Near East. The climate ranges from hot and humid along the coast to dry and even temperate in the uplands. Socotra, an island off the coast, is famously a jewel of biodiversity and is home to about 700 species found nowhere else. Mocha coffee originated in Yemen.
